Adult Class at McKenzie Lake Community Centre

Introduction:

The Calgary Kyokushin Karate club was first opened at the McKenzie Lake Community Centre by Sempai Kim Fradley in 1994. In 1999, the club was assumed by Sensei Brad Gillespie, who moved to Calgary from Vernon, British Columbia, to take a job with the Calgary Fire Department. Since that time, Sensei Brad has registered nearly 500 students with the IKO, many who have gone on to become Canadian Champions and to compete at the International level. Sensei Brad was promoted to Third Dan in October of 2004, and continues to provide a unique blend of recreational and competitive teachings to his students. He is particularly gifted in teaching children, and his structured yet gentle methods have launched many young students to new levels of achievement.

From your very first class, you will learn the key elements of this demanding art, including balance, stretching, coordination, and self-confidence. You'll learn essential self-defense techniques such as blocking and attacking, kata (forms), and kumite (sparring) while practicing with others at your own level and at your own pace.

All you need to begin is comfortable clothing (t-shirt and sweat pants) and a positive mental attitude. If you'd like to join us, please come to our training hall (dojo) approximately 15 minutes before a class. Our instructors will introduce you to our facility and tell you what you can expect from the class. If you decide to join, you will be given a student handbook to facilitate your training.

Our Classes:

Family Class: Designed for young children, and their parents and siblings. Students may train alone or with family members. This class will focus on laying the groundwork for advanced training, through basic techniques and forms.

Intermediate Children's Class: Designed for more experienced children. This class introduces students to advanced techniques and forms.

Adult Class: Designed for students 13 years of age and older. This class is ideal for beginners, but also provides top-notch training for experienced older students.
