2010 Reports | Canadian Championships

1 May, 2010

On Friday April 30th, I accompanied the Gillespie family on a road trip out to Vancouver for the Canadian Championships. After the eleven hour drive and waiting through Vancouver rush hour traffic, we arrived at the hotel. Though anxious for the fun and excitement the pool and waterslide had to offer, the Gillespie children, and myself, ate quickly to ensure that we could get to swim before the pool closed. The Sedore’s and the Klapak’s were also at our hotel, and we all had an early night to make sure we all got the rest we needed to compete for the next day’s events.

The morning came quick and we prepared ourselves and headed out to BCIT for the tournament. As we arrived there were anxious faces on the children and adults as they checked in and stepped on the weigh scales. Everybody was really excited and most of our club competed in the morning portion of the events. This included children non-contact, children knockdown and kata. We also met up with the Helfmann family who had arrived that day.
In the morning Cam Sedore, Riley and Brady Klapak, Spencer, Max, Leo and Michelle Gillespie all competed in the kata divisions. Each of them competed well and Michelle Gillespie was awarded third place for her kata performance in the Black Belt division.

As the morning events proceeded it was time for the non-contact divisions. Spencer and Max both fought their way a second place finish in their respective divisions. Alex and Andrew Sedore both fought in the same division where Alex placed first and Andrew placed second. Then there was a lunch break for the day and the tournament would resume with its knockdown divisions upon return.
The events started out with children’s knockdown under 12 years old, where Cam Sedore, Riley Klapak, Max and Spencer all fought in. They all had excellent fights and gained plenty of experience through fighting competitors from all over Alberta and British Columbia. Max Gillespie placed third in his division and brought home another medal for Calgary.

Moving on to the colored belt divisions, Ricky Helfmann placed second in 13-14 lightweight and Brady Klapak received third place. Alex Sedore placed second in 13-14 heavyweight division, once again raising the medal count to bring home for Calgary. Andrew also competed in this division and fought extremely well, gaining good fight experience and future knowledge to improve his game. Later in the afternoon I fought in the men’s open Heavyweight and placed second. After my three fights I had also learned a little more about myself as a fighter and things that I need to improve and change in order to get to the next level.

The 2010 Canadian Championships went quite well for the Calgary dojo. We had many competitors and Calgary was well represented by everybody who attended. We brought home a fair amount of medals and our competitors did well. Although not everybody won a medal, everybody did their best and came away with a better understanding of the competition and what is needed to improve themselves so that next year they can win the title. The tournament was a great success for the Calgary dojo as a whole and I congratulate everybody who competed. I also would like to thank Shihan- Stuart Corrigal for hosting the event and for the opportunity to compete in it.
