On Friday
January 12, 2007, Sempai Kim, Sensei Brad and I set out on
another excellent Kyokushin journey into the Kootenays to
attend the second annual Yahk Brown and Black Belt Training
Camp.
Getting there
was precarious, between the snowy mountain roads and darkness,
but we made it to the camp sometime in the wee hours of
Saturday morning and grabbed a couple of hours of sleep before
the early (very early) morning training session at 6:00 am.
In our first
session we covered advanced kata, spending a great deal of
time working through the detailed bunkai and technical aspects
of the three Naihanchi (Tekki) katas. It was excellent.
The rest of
the day was laid out in a two-on, two-off format. We trained
6-8 am, 10-12 noon, 2-4 pm and 6-8 pm with two-hour breaks in
between. It was truly exhausting but there is certainly
something to be said for continuous training, and staying “in
the zone” for such an extended period of time. It creates the
opportunity for truly remarkable growth to maintain a high
level of intensity for so many hours in a row.
Other
training included high-level self defense, calisthenics,
break-falling, core strength exercises, and more advanced kata.
As always the
food and company at this camp were also spectacular. We look
very much forward to attending again next year!
