33rd Canadian Championships
On May 7, 2016 The Canadian Championships came around. A brave 21 from the Calgary dojo drove from Calgary to Vancouver to participate and to spectate the Canadian Championships. The long day started with the Kata divisions. There was a mandatory Kata for your belt level that you appealed to the judges with. The top four in the division were to perform an optional Kata of their choice. Calgary brought home multiple awards in both children divisions and adult divisions and silver in team Kata. The next event was the non-contact divisions. Some of the most gut wrenching fights happened in the under 60 pounds group. The last morning event was children's knockdown. Calgary had some great matches and kept going strong to bring home some awards there. Then the action turned up a notch as the afternoon events started. A great match happened between Spencer form Calgary and Sol from Nelson. Spencer won by points and was red-chested by the end. Once the matches had concluded the awards were given out. Calgary took home many medals and plaques. Finally to conclude the tournament the team point award was given out. Calgary won first with 975 points!
Later in the evening the Sayonara Party took place. Senpai Richard was presented with his Ni-Dan certificate! As the night grew late the dance floor started to liven up. When someone started dancing someone else would too. The drive back to Calgary was a quiet one. Many people slept when they weren't driving. All in all it was a tournament to remember.

Hi my name is Hannah Popko and I am an orange belt with a blue stripe and have been doing karate for five years. On May 6th 2016, 21 people left to go to the Canadian Championships in Vancouver. After a very lengthy day of driving we finally arrived at our destination. My Dad and I found our hotel room and had dinner at Denny’s with everyone. I had a fabulous meal followed by an awesome time at the pool before going to bed.
I had a luxurious sleep that night, which was good for the upcoming competition. We met in the lobby with the Meckelborgs and the Courchesnes who were our driving buddies. When we arrived at the big gym there was a long line-up to register, which went quickly. After that we all went into the fighter’s room to get ready for kata. I was in the category for white and orange belts. For my kata I did Pinan 1. I had practiced a lot and happily got second in my division. Next up I participated in noncontact. Unfortunately, I lost my first fight in my division, but the best part was that Senpai Michelle was my coach.
As the final part of my competition I was in knockdown! This part was my favourite because in noncontact I touched the guy a lot by mistake, now I was able to actually hit them. I did terrific with Senpai Michelle coaching me. I had gone to the fight classes this year and I had really learned how to use mae geri. I won my first battle but my other competitor was a lot bigger than me and it was harder to land a front kick. I lost that round but was happy that I could relax. In my category I got third!
The afternoon was probably the best because of the other fighting that was going on. Tyler Meckelborg was fantastic but his arms were ruined after the fight! Max Gillespie had an amazing strong fight too. One of my favourite fights was Spencer Gillespie he went with the green belt that fought Tyler too. The two boys fought hard and never gave up. We were all screaming so loud. At the end of the fight Spencer had got a full point and won. Sensei Brad jumped into the air with his arms because he was so happy. We were all so proud of Spencer! Finally, Katherine had a great fight which ended with a kick to the neck but she was ok.
The sayonara was fabulous! There was wonderful food and some crazy dancing. After we ate Senpai Richard was given his Ni- Dan certificate by Shihan Don. It was all a fabulous time and I am looking forward to going again next year.
