2015 Reports | Sempai Richard Nidan Grading
Sempai Richard Nidan Grading
20 June, 2015
On June 20th IKOKC Branch Chief Shihan Stuart Corrigal travelled to Calgary to perform the practical portion of Sempai Richard Barkman’s Nidan exam.
Grading for a Kyokushin black belt in the IKOK-C is very different and much more demanding than grading for a black belt in other martial arts styles or even other branches of the IKO. It is a long and continually demanding challenge. First, in January the applicant must submit a resume of their Karate history. At this time they must also submit proof that they have completed specific courses in CPR, first aid, coaching, concussion awareness and have also had a criminal records check completed. In addition they must provide proof of medical clearance from their physician and a letter indicating their instructor’s approval.
In March, they must attend Winter camp where they will perform a written exam testing their in-depth knowledge of Kyokushin Karate. At this time they will also perform the board-breaking portion of their test. They will also go through an interview conducted by the Branch Chief and other higher-ranking black belts.
The next step of the process is the practical exam. In this stage candidates are required to perform the different elements of Kyokushin Karate in front of the Branch Chief. They display their knowledge of basic technique, ido geiko, ippon and sanbon kumite, Self-defence movement, kata and conditioning. It can be a very enlightening experience.
Not surprisingly, Sempai Richard did a great job at his practical exam and is now preparing for the kumite portion, which will take place at Summer Camp in the Okanagan in August. It is here that all the individuals grading will be put through their final paces with Shihan Corrigal and the various camp instructors throughout the weekend, with the final kumite test, happening on the Sunday afternoon before a packed crowd.
Good luck Sempai Richard…we know you are going to nail it!!!!
